BundleBean – Solar Travel Cover

The BundleBean travel cover was invented by a busy Mum of two, overwhelmed with the amount of ‘stuff’ that was needed for her little ones, she came up with a ‘one product for multiple use’ item that would make life easier for parents.

BundleBean Solar 1

Only recently available, the BundleBean Solar is a summer version of the BundleBean Go. It is much thinner and has been designed to provide UPF 50+ protection for the areas of body that it covers. Like the BundleBean Go this product is versatile and can be used for buggies, car seats, bikes or slings. The product also comes with a handy quick dry hooded beach wrap which has the ability, via poppers, to be attached to the BundleBean to provide extra warmth for when it gets a bit more chilly.

On opening I found the travel cover to be made of a super thin material, similar to the sort of tops that joggers wear. The beach wrap is smooth on one side and has a beautifully soft fleecy feel on the other. The main cover has zippers on the side. The zippers are attached to elastic round the bottom of the cover and pulling the zips up tightens the end so that they can be fitted on a variety of different travel equipment, making it really easy to use.

BundleBean Solar 2

The product is only available in white, presumably as this is a cooler colour. The only issue I had with this is that it gets dirty easily, especially as Jacob insisted on rubbing his feet all over it. However this is not too much of a problem as it doesn’t take up much space so it is easily chucked in with the usual washing load. What’s more, the product washes well and dries really fast. What I also liked is that the cover can be easily attached when little one is sleeping to minimise disturbance.

The BundleBean Solar is a fantastic idea, especially for younger babies and holidays. However, it is important to bear in mind that sunscreen will still need to be added if baby is coming in and out of the cover. The fact that there are two different sections is really useful as it further extends the products uses.

The RRP for this product is £34.99. I believe this is a great investment if bought when your child is very young as it has a great variety of uses. Once little one is in and out of the buggy more the uses may be more limited but is still a great little product to have to hand, especially for long journeys.

Happy Faces Childrens Salon – a Review

It needed doing, J’s hair is an unruly mess of ginger curls.  It knots and matts and no matter how much de-tangle spray and how gentle I am with the tangle teaser, J ends up in tears.  I decided that at aged 3 and half, she needed to get a cut.  Unfortunately because of the curls her hair springs up so I knew it was only going to be more of a trim.

I researched the internet, trying to find somewhere local-ish to where I live, not too expensive and who knew what they were doing with a small child who may or may not sit there.  I came across Happy Faces Children’s Hair Salon.  There are two branches, Webbs Road in Clapham SW11 and Muster Road, Fulham SW6.    I checked out the website www.yourhappyfaces.com and found that the Fulham branch is closed on a Monday & Tuesday, Mondays are my day off work and “get things done” day so I chose the Clapham branch.  I read the blurb, and more importantly the reviews. Everyone seemed to be very happy.

I decided to give them a call and for a start have a chat about J, what her hair is like and what I want.  After telling them about J’s hair and that she screams and runs from the brush and hates having her hair washed or brushed, the lady at the other end of the phone advised that in their experience; often children will sit for a stranger rather than their parents.  I crossed my fingers and booked an appointment for just a cut. The salon do a first haircut package but I decided against it

We arrived slightly early but luckily as we had a 10am appointment on a Monday morning, there was only one other child.  When you walk in, you are taken straight into the Jungle.  The walls & ceiling are adorned with pictures from The Jungle Book and jungle animals.  In the centre of the room are four large back to back mirrors with four different chairs for the children. You can choose from Thomas The Tank Engine, Noddy’s car, a pink Princess Plane and Noddy’s aeroplane.  J chose Noddy’s car.  Between the two mirrors are flat screen tv’s which this time were showing Peppa Pig cartoons. Perfect for J to keep her occupied.

We were seen by Nicola and we set about discussing J’s hair care routine (almost non-existent!) the best way to look after it and what our aims for the visit were.  Nicola sprayed J’s hair with an abundance of de-tangler, got the brush out and started very gently.  Unfortunately, speaking from experience; it really hurts having curly hair brushed so J started crying a bit.  It’s okay I was there to hold her hand.  She was very brave and tried very hard to concentrate on Peppa.  Nicola constantly talked to us and let me know what she was doing whilst I picked her brains about what I can do to make things easier on J.  Before we knew it, J’s hair had been all trimmed and tidied and she looked beautiful and very proud of herself.  She was allowed to choose a balloon and given a lollipop to take home.

The salon sell’s organic children’s hair care products by Mini-U for kids.  They had a 2 for 1 promotion on so whilst there was no pushing by Nicola, I decided to get two bottles of leave in conditioner for £9.50.  The hair cut was £16.95 and you get a loyalty card.  The 10th cut is free… it may take some time for us to get to ten!

The salon also runs parties, pampering for girls and pirates for the boys.  There’s a nail bar for older girls too.   Nicola said these are extremely popular.

Overall, I was really pleased with the service we received. It’s hard to tell if it was a “good” cut as with curly hair you can hide a multitude of things but it definitely wasn’t bad, J’s hair didn’t spring up to Annie proportions which it would if it was cut too short.  I’ll definitely be going back and trying to get my 10th free cut.

Review – Tesco Finest* Lighter Pizzas

If you’ve followed this site for a while then you’ll probably know I love pizza. Pizza is my downfall, my weakness. I did Weight Watchers (still am!) and didn’t eat as much of the glorious dough-y stuff for a while, having occasional ones here and there while trawling the supermarkets looking for the elusive WW own brand pizza. I’ve still never found them.

Finest Pizza Low Calorie

Help is at hand though – Tesco have their own brand lighter pizzas in the Finest range – and we were sent two – the Finest Woodfired Chargrilled Pepper and Tomato & Chipotle Chilli Salsa (430 calories) and Woodfired Chicken, Mint & Coriander (445 calories) varieties. There are also Woodfired Margherita & Basil Pesto and Woodfired Salsiccia Marinara Pizza varieties available. (I don’t have any calorie information for those)

Finest Pizza Low Calorie

Weight Watchers wise they’d be approximately 11 points at the most which for me is great – given a regular Domino’s slice can be 7 points.

Finest Pizza Low Calorie

In fact, both pizzas are delicious and we enjoyed them tonight – the vegetarian one being the one I had (its spicy, I did have to take some of the chillies off, but it had a good taste to it, minimal cheese but you didn’t miss it and tomato so well sundried H didn’t complain about them which is a plus!), and the chicken one being the one Shaun and H shared and found the chicken to be just right, the sauce complemented the pizza well and the mint and coriander dressing was pretty good too. The base is really thin and crispy and didn’t get soggy (which I hate when that happens) and held the toppings well.

Finest Pizza Low Calorie - chicken

The toppings weren’t generous but they were adequate – the pizzas were filling without being too much. Had I been more organised we’d have had it with a salad, but we got in tonight quite late so had very little time to prepare anything.

Finest Pizza Low Calorie - pepper

These pizzas are available in store now – pick them up before I buy them all… I’m definitely trying the cheese and tomato one!  They cost £4 each or are on offer at £7 for two.

We were sent the pizzas for the purpose of review. My opinion is honest and full of huge relief at a decent low-calorie pizza at LAST.

A Devon Cliffs Haven Break

Devon Cliffs has been our holiday destination two years in a row – so I decided we should do a review. It’s long!

Devon Cliffs is Haven’s Flagship park, and somewhere we’re familiar with. We booked way up front with a deal via a newspaper as we had done the previous year and chose to go back to – we knew there was a lot more to go and see. The break came in at around £120 total, for accommodation, linen and passes for a Monday to Friday break.

An added bonus is that the excellent Rachel and family live up the road in Exeter, so we extended our stay by a couple of days – more of which to follow as we did a LOT!

So, we returned to Devon Cliffs. I phoned in a request with them to stay in a similar area to last year as we found it quiet – when we stayed at Hafan-y-mor in North Wales we were next to the entertainment complex and its horrendous soundproofing (I can’t use earplugs as I have tinnitus so had to make do with the noise and the people leaving afterwards). We were pleased as we ended up being allocated the same ‘little house’ as last year, in Rowan Meadow. You’re about three caravans length-wise from the cliffs and the sea and on a sunny day you’re facing the sun in the mornings which makes the cold start much more bearable.

Devon Cliffs May 2013

Three mornings at Devon Cliffs

On getting back to our caravan nothing had changed – other than this year you have to take your own towels (bedding is supplied as an extra, made up on arrival) – that was fine, though I’m now looking for microfibre towels to take should we go again as they dry quicker than regular ones – drying space is a bit lacking! (you get a rack and there is a laundrette in the main area)

This wasn’t a major issue as our caravan was our base for getting around the area, however the weather had other ideas – we knew the Tuesday would be pretty bad with rain, so decided to try out the facilities at Devon Cliffs – so went swimming. We didn’t try anything else as it was outdoors although you can pay up-front to use them. In the pool H wasn’t keen on the big slide though loved the smaller pool play area. It isn’t deep and H wasn’t out of her depth. There are no floatables to borrow so we bought H a float for about £7 at the pool reception. There’s plenty of staff cleaning the floors and keeping them as clean as possible, and as far as the swimming goes we had fun – it was too cold for us to go to the outdoor pools.

Afterwards we had lunch at the Mash & Barrel – the main pub area (think along the lines of Wetherspoons) – where our waiter asked Shaun if he’d like ‘crisps or chips’ with our sandwiches. Shaun opted for chips… and this is where things got a bit confusing. When the food arrived we had crisps AND chips. As I’d asked Shaun to get a portion for us to share we didn’t complain, but it’s worth making sure the person serving you knows exactly what you want. The vegetarian burger there is great and I was happy with it.

Sandy Beach at Devon Cliffs 2013

Unlike previous times, we only ate at Devon Cliffs twice – once on our first evening there and once on the rainy day. One plus with the food area is a soft play section, though I spotted a piece of string/rope across the lower area which worried me. I mentioned it to a member of staff as I felt it could be dangerous, and nobody had been to check when we left. This could be me being overcautious, and they do recommend your child is supervised at all times. There wasn’t anyone policing the entrance and a lot of older kids were on there which was a bit annoying as they were well over the maximum height.

We did what any parent who wants to keep their child entertained does, and headed upstairs for the disco – the one for toddlers and young kids. H was shy about it the first night (as I stood there singing along to ‘Hands Up’ by Justin Fletcher and ‘Big Red Car’ by The Wiggles, oh indie cred, I’ve let you down horribly), but the second night in her sparkly Moshi Monsters t-shirt and she was ready to dance. She didn’t win any prizes (which were sweets) but had fun. The kids were led from the dancefloor a few times to ‘Follow the leader’ (as in, have your photo taken with one of the characters for £5ish) but we opted out – it was popular and the queues were big. This meant H had the dancefloor to herself for a bit anyway. The staff were all really enthusiastic and had fun – though a character was introduced on the stage and sung songs nobody knew which kind of lost the kids a bit (I thought). They all seemed to have fun, and there was a sweet shop to the side with illuminated toys and sugar for sale – which we managed to avoid.

On our second to last night at Devon Cliffs we went to the beach, building sandcastles and flying our kite. We had the whole beach to ourselves pretty much. Afterwards we headed up to the seafront bar for some food – bear in mind vegetarians, this place is big on fish! There’s decent veggie options and I settled for a large salad which was really filling. H tried her first prawn and enjoyed it, and Shaun found them tasty – so if you like your seafood skip the Mash & Barrel. This is also the bar which features on the ‘Echo Beach’ advert!

Sandy Beach at Devon Cliffs 2013

There’s one BIG thing which never happened last time we stayed at Devon Cliffs – the Royal Marines shooting range was used daily, next to the campsite. At first I thought there was some outdoor fireworks display, then it hit home. I then had to explain to H why they were firing things and making the noise as best I could… not a big problem, but one I didn’t realise existed before – so if you want to avoid that, request to be away from the cliffs.

So, going back to Devon Cliffs – was it a good idea? I’m happy with our stay – we all had a good sleep thanks to it being quiet – and we got to see more of the area. Would we go back again? Probably not – but only because we’ve probably exhausted the area close by – we’re thinking about Cornwall next year and going a bit further south (so will look at Haven sites as we know what we’re getting). We took minimal food and stocked up in the Spar which came in around £10 which I thought was very reasonable. I know we’re the kind of family who will use the on-site facilities but do leave the site for most of the day to do other things.

Could anything be improved? Possibly – I liked not having to take our own towels last year! The kids entertainment was good, and given H was confident enough to head down the front and dance with the other kids I was happy with that, though found the character entertainment songs quite loud (with my ears I’m sensitive to it) – I’m sure it’s well within limits but thought it’s worth mentioning. Some lower calorie options with meals would have been nice, although I put my blinkers on and just ate what I fancied (and only put on 1lb in the process – phew). We couldn’t find a check-out time for Devon Cliffs so I tweeted Haven for confirmation – it’s 10am, should anyone else find themselves googling it. It doesn’t say anywhere (the Haven Website wouldn’t work on my iPad, weirdly). Someone came to clean our caravan at 9.30, so they’re keen.

Devon Cliffs May 2013

What was good? I love that Devon Cliffs has child cutlery in the food areas and make sure your child has something to colour in (hats this year!). I love their kids food menu has choice at the heart of it, so you give your child more of a chance to pick what they want (even if it isn’t necessarily the most healthy…). I really liked how the pool was the right size, and older kids didn’t get in the way or barge the little ones out of the way. I loved we were in a quiet area at night, although it was freezing – we had three duvets on our bed! We would have ordered from Papa John’s again this year as I like the convenience of having it delivered to your caravan, but didn’t have the time. I bought three days of internet for £12 which meant back at the caravan I could look up things for the following day, buy tickets and so on – we didn’t have that as an option last year, so that was a HUGE thumbs up from me as it helped a lot – especially as my phone didn’t work (never has Everything Everywhere been such an inaccurate name for a service…!)

So yes, that’s us and Devon Cliffs 2013. We enjoyed our time there, wish the weather could have been a bit warmer but managed fine – AND H now likes having showers – result!

MAM – Learn to Drink Cup

I’ll never forget the first time I saw a MAM bottle. What struck me straightaway was how pretty they were. Usually ‘first’ bottles seem to be very boring and practical, whilst these were colourful and had lovely designs on them.

MAM 4

I had by that point invested in baby bottles, sterilisers and such like, so didn’t have the need to get any more. However, I was keen to hear what other people thought of them, which always seemed to be very positive.

I was sent the MAM Learn to Drink 190ml cup to review. The cup has the very handy options of ‘free flow’ or ‘non spill’ all the with the help of a removable attachment.

At 19 months Jacob still has one bottle of milk in the evening after his dinner and before bed. We plan to wean him off this in the very near future but for now it’s a comfort to him and a  great way of topping up his calcium. We have tried to move him on to beakers and whilst this has worked with water since he was six months old he has remained very stubborn with his beloved milk. This is where I have found the MAM cup to be amazing. Out of curiosity one evening I gave him his milk in this cup and he drank it as normal… something that has never happened before (normally it ends up with him screaming, throwing said cup and refusing to drink from it). I tried it the next night to make sure the previous night wasn’t a fluke and he drank it again. I believe this is very much to do with the cup looking like a baby bottle and having a softish spout. All I can say is I wish that we had discovered this cup sooner as it would have proved very useful, something to bear in mind for next time maybe?

MAM 3

I think this product is great and only have two minor quibbles. Firstly within 10 minutes of drinking from the bottle there were already little teeth marks in the spout. Not necessarily a problem as such, as one would expect a certain amount of wear and tear when there is a soft spout, but did make me wonder how long this would hold up against my little terror. Secondly it is a shame there is no measurement guide against the side. This isn’t the end of the world as most sippy cups don’t but it would be nice.

Those little niggles aside I would highly recommend this cup, especially as a transitional ‘bottle to cup’ product. The cup retails at £5.99, which I believe it good value, and extras such as handles also fit this product so it is easy to mix and match.

I was sent this item for the purpose of review, all opinions are my own

3M’s Damage-Free Hanging

We rent, and already I look in pain at the door which has a load of blu-tack stains on it – we like putting pictures on our walls, and I hate banging nails in (though they’re more acceptable than blu-tack stains, I’m sure).

So there’s this ad on tv. I keep seeing it, and after H made a lovely picture on a canvas of her hand and foot prints, and had decided where it was going to live on the walls, I knew I had to do something about it so bought some, which arrived a few days later.

These hangers don’t come cheap – but oh, they work.

pictureframe and stickers

It’s essentially two pieces of sticky velcro which stick together, which you can move if you’re like me and do everything by eye rather than measure it (it drives Shaun mad), but most importantly of all, there’s no left over sticky residue (I checked after a few days to make sure). That and once your picture is fixed/velcroed to the wall, it’s pretty secure. I’ve not tried it with anything heavy yet, but so far I’m impressed – I just wish they were a bit cheaper as I’ve a LOT of photos need putting onto the walls…!

stickers on frame

In my pack I received 4 sets of small strips (enough for the canvas) and 8 sets of medium strips (enough for two heavier pictures or one very heavy one – I’m too scared to try it out though!) – I feel like when I get around to ordering a canvas or two, these are the perfect solution – plus your picture stays close to the wall.

It’s definitely an option worth looking into if you too are living in blu-tack stain-hell!

Film Review – Playing For Keeps

Playing For Keeps DVD

This one for me has quite a mixed review. At first I quite liked the film – I’ve never seen anything with Gerard Butler in it and had to google him as I wasn’t sure if he really is scottish or if he was trying to do the accent (he is), but a film which is based on football is always a good thing in my book. The football matches with him edited in kind of amused me and I thought it was all set to go in a good way. He’s retired from the game and wants to be a sports presenter on tv.

BUT THEN

Enter three women, one of which you have had some respect for as an actress, playing dim, WAG-esque ladies throwing themselves at the footballers feet, and suddenly things aren’t so enjoyable any more.

The football takes a back seat. Catherine Zeta Jones was particularly annoying. Sorry Catherine. Uma Thurman I was disappointed in… Uma, you were fabulous in Pulp Fiction and all those other films around then – what are you doing?! Dennis Quaid is the husband who throws around cash to make sure his daughter is included and sweeps Gerard Butler off his feet with flash cars and more. As Shaun put it, “Dennis Quaid is going to be a moral quandary in this film” (which he was).

BUT

The football element of the film gets quite lovely at times – a former player who becomes coach for kids and shows them how to play. I wish it had been a bigger focus rather than one for the women – oh, and the three annoying women are married too, of course. Apart from the one who isn’t any more. Anyway, Gerard Butler was married and he’s trying to win his wife back (played by Jessica Biel who was quite good) who is about to marry someone else anyway.

Playing For Keeps

Oh, and they have a child, who is in the football team of course.

There were funny moments, and I have to admit, were it not for the annoying women I would have enjoyed this much more – they were pointless, irritating and annoying and the story would have worked just fine without Gerard Butler having all the women throwing themselves at him.

So yes, a bit disappointing, not my kind of film. If you forget the bits with the married women are in there, it’s quite enjoyable!

Playing For Keeps

Sorry.

Playing For Keeps is released on DVD on the 20th May 2013.

We Love Books – The Hueys in It Wasn’t Me by Oliver Jeffers

Oliver Jeffers The Hueys in It Wasn't MeThere isn’t an Oliver Jeffers book we don’t like, and his newest ‘The Hueys in It Wasn’t Me’ arrived and filled us full of happy as we loved ‘The New Jumper’ the previous book.

We met The Hueys for the first time last year – Gillespie wore a jumper and was different – and this year we’re coming across some arguments. What I love the most about this is how the arguments are illustrated – it made me smile.

The Hueys Argue

See?

Genius.

Anyway, the book is wonderfully simple and gets a good message across – The Hueys end up forgetting what they’re actually arguing about and in the end are distracted…

I did end up having a little giggle. The book has already been read several times and at a time when H does love to argue and does indeed forget why, this feels like the perfect addition.

Monski Mouse – Coming to a Dancefloor Near You – and Soon!

DJ Monski Mouse & daughter Monalisa

Monski Mouse is the alter-ego of Monica Corduff Gonzalez who does discos for under 5’s around the world. She comes from Australia, and currently lives in the UK. She’s bringing her dance event to the London Wonderground this summer with Monski Mouse’s Baby Disco Dance Hall. We’re interviewing Monica, so we can find out loads more about the events – as well as reviewing it (and quite frankly I may be the most excited of all of us about this).

Two sold out Adelaide Fringe seasons (2012 & 2013), an Edinburgh Fringe and bookings at festivals such as Norfolk and Norwich Festival (Sold Out) and the Freedom Festival, Monski Mouse’s Baby Disco Dance Hall has been getting heads, shoulders, knees and toes bopping along since its launch in February 2012.

Monski Mouse has made a career from DJ-ing quirky retro tracks, while dressed as a glamour-girl-mouse, for the last ten years, at arts festivals and clubs including Adelaide Cabaret Festival, Melbourne International Comedy Festival and Edinburgh Fringe. Since becoming a Mum in 2010, Monski Mouse expanded her focus to the morning audience, of bubs, toddlers and parents/carers, in a career move that fits in with her current role as a working Mum.

“I count myself really lucky to able to adapt my performance career to make work my daughter can enjoy, and I am totally blown away by how much she absolutely loves the Baby Disco Dance Hall.” says Monski Mouse,”Plus its so much fun to have dance before tea time, what an absolutely wonderful way to spend your day!”

The event features Monski Mouse hosting and DJing, two experienced early childhood performers as ‘dancers’, who work with the audience, and a ‘baby area’ where the non walkers can roll around to the music.

“I feel extremely privileged to be performing this disco, the delight I get to see in young children’s eyes and their parents faces is incredibly special, I am a very, very lucky mouse.” says Monski Mouse.
