The Happy Badger Popped By

The Happy Badger is a very generous badger who donates money to charities you nominate.

The Happy Badger popped by Mum Friendy and donated to Cancer Research. My dad died of bowel cancer, my mum has had two forms of cancer as well as other complications and my nana died from leukaemia, Cancer is something which I’ve lived alongside for over twenty years.

Cancer is something our entire family has lived alongside.

I’ve done Race For Life several times (I had a year off this year but intend to do it again next year, possibly with H) and raised upwards of £750 each time – running or walking or jogging with friends, raising cash along the way for Cancer Research. See, I figure any money which helps towards a cure for cancer means at some point in the future H or her children will talk about it like it was an age-old disease, something people don’t get any more. Maybe there’ll never be a cure, but every penny helps towards research.

I’ve sat with two of my closest family members as they passed away – and I don’t want H to go through that, I want research to make a difference once we’re all a bit older. Every bit of money makes a difference, and that has to be a good thing.

So thank you Happy Badger, I really appreciate your donation. I nominate http://www.cancerresearchuk.org/ as that covers the many cancers we’ve come across.

I find writing about it all quite difficult even several years on, but I do recognise the need for awareness and making sure people know to check for the signs. My dad didn’t, and the doctors didn’t suspect a thing – in fact it was only when he was diagnosed all the symptoms made sense (bowel cancer with secondary cancer in the liver) and it surprised everyone.

A Big Lollibop Update!

LolliBop, the UK’s biggest kid’s festival, has announced Britain’s Got Talent finalists Pre-Skool will be performing live at this year’s event.

LolliBop 2013

Lollibop is two weeks away! Last week they announced another fantastic addition to the lineup – the 12-strong dance group Pre-Skool. They’re all aged between 5 and 9 andare making their very first live appearance since the hit ITV show and will perform daily for mini festivalgoers.

Choreographer Terry Michael, who runs the TDM stage school where the group meet and rehearse, said: “The children are really excited about going to LolliBop – there are loads of things they want to see in between performances!”

Everyone’s favorite fashion icon, Hello Kitty, is also confirmed to appear at LolliBop 2013.

Hello Kitty will be meeting her adoring fans around the LolliBop site and also as a special guest appearance during the official opening. Expect plenty of glamour, a sprinkle of Hello Kitty magic and all round super-cute fun!

LolliBop’s event manager Jenny Kane said: “Hello Kitty is an international icon and her fan base spans many generations, we know parents and kids alike will be thrilled to meet her in person.”

And the cast from Peter Pan the Arena Tour will be flying in to perform a medley from the hit show on the Lolli Live stage over the three days.

LolliBop, the UK’s biggest festival for kids, takes place at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, August 16-18. The newest acts join an impressive bill, which includes Justin Fletcher, Cloudbabies, Dick and Dom, Skylanders, Rastamouse and Postman Pat.

LolliBop’s live theatre tent – The Lollipalladiam – showcases performances from pioneering and internationally renowned companies and artists. Tween Town is especially for older kids, with cool activities like radio workshops, movie editing and beatboxing masterclasses. Imagination Stations are situated throughout the festival for 3-10 year olds to get crafty, there’s also a 3ft and under zone for pre-schoolers. The Enchanted Forest will host reading and stories and there’s also a brand new Discovery Zone, Meadows area and Lolli Promenade.

Pocket Money – What Do You Do?

Pocket money is one of those things which will creep up on us all before we know it. We’ve been tackling it early but keeping it simple.

Pocket money, oh joy. H isn’t even four yet and we’ve been doing it for a year or so now – last year we were one of the finalists in a money saving competition and over the year we’ve done lots of 5p tasks, putting the money into her moneybox as we go.

pocket money box

The tooth fairy paid a visit recently and bumped up the amount to a much higher one (okay, just £1 but in H terms that’s like a million pounds) – and we’ve not been as good at assigning 5p tasks as we should be.

Locally we’ve a shop, Calladoodles which I’m going to post a feature on soon – it’s a lovely shop with gorgeous handmade things on sale and we’re in there most weeks. They’ve just opened a mail order site and need to be checked out – I could spend so much in there. They stock Miffy things (we love Miffy in our house) as well as Cath Kidston and Orla Kiely… yum.

The last time we were in, H spotted a bracelet she liked so we decided we’d count her pennies and if she had enough we could spend them in there – and as of this morning she has enough. My little girl will have a little purse with her savings in, and will spend it on something she really wants – I’m a bit excited!

We’ve kept it simple as well, while this isn’t pocket money it won’t be long before she’s asking for some. So what is the right amount for an almost four year old starting school in just over a month? I’m thinking 50p a week with anything extra being things she’s earned (at 5p a time). I want her to have some money sense and ideally add the savings to her bank account – what do you do?

Airport Money Saving Tips

Airport Money Saving Tips are essential – we’ve flown a few times and I’m the kind of person who doesn’t like to spend money unless I absolutely have to. Purple Parking have created a handy money-saving guide on their site, and I’d like to share some of mine.

Get your holiday insurance before travelling! Most places sell it when you’re in Duty Free, though you may not get the best policy that way. We’ve often been caught out, spending up to £50 in the process. Even worse, I had to do a claim when some of my belongings went missing, and the excess was £50 – so after that I ended up with a cheque for £2.50. Shop around beforehand!

Parking-wise, we’re Purple Parking customers – one thing I’d say, make sure you write down where you’re parked otherwise you’ll end up like Shaun and I when we arrived back at Stansted just before midnight one year, taking over two hours to find our car. When we parked I knew I’d remember the number (as it was similar to a song) and by the time we landed I was exhausted and had forgotten. There’s a reason there’s a space on your ticket to write it down!  We booked up-front which gives you a better deal than paying as you get there.

I always look out for deals online before getting to Duty Free – my favourite one was the Clarins Eau Dynamissante two for £25 deal which I often caught – a bottle would cost around £18 in-store, so two at that price was amazing. These days you can shop online before you even get to the airport, picking it up as you’re boarding your flight.

The last time we flew H was fifteen months – as we were staying with the in-laws we didn’t need to take a lot, but we still needed enough in our hand luggage for a days worth of flying. Luckily a lot is provided by the airlines, so read up beforehand. It’s worth bearing in mind the limits for liquids and so on at the security check, as you can pick them up in Duty Free generally (like bottles of water), so don’t take more than you need.

The one we get caught out on every time – make sure you’ve included an overseas tariff in your mobile phone package. There’ll be that one time you need to phone relatives or friends and you’ll need to use your phone, eventually coming home to a £50 bill rather than your usual £15 – so look into what your provider offers, or if your phone is able to take it, think about buying a Pay As You Go SIM card to use in your phone to use when you get there.

fastening a car seat to a suitcase, airport money saving tips

The last time we went to Australia we had a LOT of luggage. Our taxi was cancelled due to the snow, so we had three suitcases, one cabin sized suitcase, a changing bag, a buggy and one other bag – oh, and a car seat. We got the train to Gatwick, and travelling in the cold one top tip which costs nothing and I always pass on, wrap your car seat in a large bin bag. Not all airlines will let you have your car seat in the cabin, so you want to protect it from any cold and wet (and it’ll be freezing in the hold if it ends up there).

As far as transporting it, Yyou can buy loads of fancy gadgets to carry things but in the end a simple belt around our cabin sized suitcase was enough for us – and was something we already had. That and we had a lot of help from people on the train, as you can imagine!!

Taking the train to the airport is less than a taxi but keep an eye out for buses that go to airports. From Carshalton there’s an express bus which is every 30 minutes – the X26 from Croydon to Heathrow. You pay the cost of a single fare on the bus – which is good if you’re looking to save money. It takes an hour and a half on a bad day.

I hope some of these are helpful – don’t get caught out like we did, an airport is somewhere you can save money, and hopefully these airport money saving tips will be of use!

We have been sent vouchers for this post.

Check Your Car Insurance

Check your car insurance! Following on from the last post about Contents Insurance, we got our car renewal through earlier this week.

Check your car insurance – Shaun did and spotted an error – for some reason when we moved house they didn’t amend the postcode which says where the car would be kept. A quick call and our annual premium has been reduced by £12 a year – not the biggest amount, but considering it hadn’t been done since we moved it has given us a bit of extra money which is a good thing!

It’s one of those small things you wouldn’t think to check, but yet it makes a big difference. It’s something which should have been noticed when we moved, but wasn’t.

So yeah, don’t forget to read the small print. That and check when you change address that your insurance company has done it too.

Jump Up and Join In With Carrie and David Grant

Jump Up and Join In With Carrie and David Grant is a new series of books and an app – read on to find out more.

Jump Up and Join In with Carrie and David Grant are a series of books created to encourage children to learn various aspects of music – rhythm, quiet, loud and much more. – H and I were invited to Egmont’s offices to preview an app based on the first book ‘Lion’s Speedy Sauce’.

Jump Up and Join In

We received a copy of ‘Elephant’s Birthday Bells’ in our goody bag, a book we’re already familiar with – all the stories are based around music and rhythm with a CD at the back (so you can play and read along) as well as a song. We’ll follow this up with a review of the first two books but this event was to launch an accompanying app for the first book, ‘Jump Up and Join In – Lion’s Speedy Sauce’.

We got to meet Carrie and David – and they’re both really lovely (and yes, I didn’t mention David’s eighties pop career in Linx, I was very well-behaved) and I had a quick chat with Carrie about music.

Jump Up and Join In with Carrie and David Grant

What appeals to me about the Jump Up and Join In books and the app are how you can come at the book from various angles – children all learn differently and there’s many entry levels into the books – be it listening to the CD’s or looking at pictures or playing the app to name three, and Carrie and David recognise this, having experienced different kinds of learning with their children. We’ve missed Carrie and David’s Pop Shop due to H’s age, but I like what they’re doing. Shows like Zingzillas came after them – and we spoke of an appreciation of Yo Gabba Gabba and shows which come at music differently.

It doesn’t have to be high energy nursery rhymes all the time (not that there’s anything wrong with that, but y’know).

Jump Up and Join In - H at Egmont Books

For me, the proof this is our kind of thing came with H singing the ‘Ella Elephant’ song a day after we listened to the Jump Up and Join In CD for the first time – so I’m looking forward to updates on the app to include the other books.

Next week we’ll follow this up with a review of the app, but on first glance I’m impressed. H liked having the story read to her, though wasn’t as keen to have her picture taken (I have no idea why she was shy!) – you can add yourself as a character to dance with Carrie and David. The activities involved playing the bongos to a rhythm, and happily David told us that you can’t get it wrong, even the worst score would get a bronze star so your child doesn’t feel like they’ve failed.

Jump Up and Join In - Carrie and David

We’ll also be reviewing the book we received – and as David said, when children are learning and having fun they’ll learn so much more. I agree, and have sung scales with H for the first time ever – but more on that very soon. Right now I’d recommend you keep an eye out for the app which is released on Monday and is currently Apple only, though there was talk of more versions being available possibly.

Thank you to Egmont for the invite, and thank you to Carrie and David for being there to explain it all – you’ve gained two big fans here!

Panasonic WiFi Camcorders

Panasonic WiFi Camcorders look pretty amazing – they have WiFi capability – it connects to your home WiFi connection. Lordy. You realise what this means? I’m still getting my head around it – a camera which is like your iPad but has proper hi-definition good quality. I’m impressed – we do a lot of Skype chats with family in York and Australia – it’s the best way to keep in touch – and more often than not our camera gives poor results.

You can even add emails to alert family members when the broadcast is starting. This appeals a lot – the amount of times we have to make quick calls around the world to make sure everyone is online and ready.. I think a Panasonic WiFi Camcorder may be on our Christmas list for this year!

I received compensation for putting this video on Mum Friendly

A Starting School Holiday Break

We’ve booked another Haven holiday…

Last night I booked a holiday for us and our friends – another Haven holiday. After lots of shopping around it came in at our budget – around £350 for the six of us for a Friday to Monday stay right before the girls start school. (well not right before, a week or so maybe)

We know Haven – we’ve been to Devon Cliffs twice, and last year also went to Hafan-y-Mor in August too. This time we’re booked into Seaview in Dorset – and already I can see we’re close to Corfe Castle (which I’ve always fancied visiting), and I’d love to get a trip to Mottisfont too where there’s a Winnie the Pooh exhibition.

Pecorama view

So knowing what we have on-site for entertainment, can anyone recommend anything nearby that we should know about? Lyme Regis is just up the road (Alice’s Bear Shop!) and we went to Pecorama last year – so somewhere which is new would be great.

Help please!

Mayfield Lavender Festival Coming This Weekend!

Weekend WeatherSee that there? Saturday and Sunday are going to be W-A-R-M! Hot! Sun! (Friday too, but I’m at work so I kind of pretend it isn’t there really). If you’re near here then this weekend is the Mayfield Lavender Festival – and it’s free! It runs from 10am to 6pm.

We love Mayfield Lavender as it’s fields of the stuff – you can wander around and I’d like to think the aroma has a calming effect – then spend a bit of money on some bunches to take home and make your home smell good too, and I’m tempted to try a bit of baking with some this year.

This area of Surrey used to be the main place lavender grew when it was first introduced to the UK way back in time –  you only have to drive through Wallington at Christmas to see the lights – lavender shaped ones of course!

Mayfield Lavender Festival

There’s loads of parking, though it can often get full in nice weather – so bear it in mind, and there’s not a lot of shelter if the sun is really intense so take water (though there is a cafe area – and the Oaks Park is over the road which has some shelter too)

Coming up at the end of the month is the Stanley Park Allotments pick your own Annual Harvest weekend too.
