Sponsored Video – Samsung Presents the Monkey Thief

You’re probably wondering what on earth I’m talking about – a monkey thief? Well. There’s a new Samsung Fridge Freezer and it’s got many features that are important these days – as well as keeping energy consumption low.

We rent, but we do own our own fridge freezer (as well as having the landlady’s fridge and freezer too), and while I like it, it’d be nice to have one that’s easily accessible where we can get our food  and drink with hardly any spillage – and Samsung have only gone and created a fridge freezer which has this feature.

Firstly, there’s an Easy Slide shelf which means you can organise your space better and hold all fruit and veg without it being too packed in. There’s also a Full Open Box within the bottom mounted freezer which can be pulled out fully to store and take larger items without losing space (I’m thinking pizza boxes here… I always struggle getting them into the freezer, oh and don’t talk to me about the ice cube tray, the amount of spillages I have when I’m putting the ice cube trays in… sigh)

The Big Guard door shelf also fits big and tall bottles – the amount of times we’d have bottles in our fridge door which have to lie horizontally, not making the best of what little space there is (and again, more spillage).

In the freezer there’s a CoolSelect zone which you can control the temperature of, and the MoistFresh zone which controls air circulation to keep the humidity to store vegetables and fruit for a long time.

But don’t let me bore you with fridge freezer talk – there’s an ad, and it’s quirky – check it out…

So if you did happen to buy one of these Samsung Fridge Freezers, keep an eye out for monkeys, but be safe in the knowledge that whatever happens, your food will be fresh…

Finger Knitting Good!

As part of my technology-free Saturday I did some finger knitting with H (aged almost three and a half) – and considering she’s quite a patient little girl I was amazed how quickly she picked it up (as you do need to be really patient!). Currently we have two bracelets, and she has a sense of achieving something “a bit like mummy”. She needed help but knew what to do once we’d done it a few times.

Finger knitting is new to me; I’ve knitted since I was young, though only followed my first pattern late last year. It follows the same principle as a knitting doll bobbin.

Hold the wool with the thumb of the hand you’re going to be knitting on and wind the wool around each finger alternately until you’ve looped them over each finger two times – remember to keep hold of the end your thumb is holding!

Then all you do is pull the lower loop over the upper one. Start again winding the wool around each finger until you have two loops on each finger, and keep going, making sure you start from the same finger each time you pull the lower loop over the upper (we started from the little finger). Eventually it’ll look like this :

At some point you’ll want to cast off. Cut your wool but leave a good length on it, and thread the end through the wool on each finger. Remove the wool from the fingers and pull tight – and voila – you’ll have something which looks a bit like a large knitted bracelet!

The best thing about this is the lack of mess, and it’s something you can do quickly and easily – and you don’t need a whole ball of wool either. I picked up a knitting doll bobbin from Tiger for £3 recently so think we may make a start on that with H, see how we get on…

Hey Hey Hey Have a Henry Hugglemonster Day!

We’ve already mentioned Henry Hugglemonster on here a couple of weeks ago – are you ready for some episodes? Did you catch the sneak peek a couple of weeks ago? Are you ready for some monster-y family fun?

We were invited into central London to meet Niamh Sharkey, the creator of the ‘I’m A Happy Hugglemonster’ book the show is based on, and learn how to draw Henry – something H really enjoyed doing.

Niamh read the story to us (and later H recognised another of her books which Henry reads in the story – The Ravenous Beast)

A Day Of No Technology – The Results:

I passed. Just. No internet is interesting. I rely on it a huge amount – from checking if trains are running to times if we go out, so having Shaun check (and not even let me look at the computer) was interesting – I prefer to do it all myself so had to let him do it instead – and as he told me various times I couldn’t understand it – I’m definitely someone who needs to see things to understand them.

I only had one text. Shaun took charge of my phone (I put it on silent), and I think as most of my friends knew I was doing this that might text me, they just got in touch with Shaun instead.

Emails. I have loads. On Friday night I unsubscribed from places I’ve been signed up with, but just delete the mails without reading which I should have done a long time ago. That, or places I’m subscribed under multiple addresses. I still had about 250+ emails to go through this morning, though none were urgent, and all were easily dealt with.

I noticed how much I look at something and think “ooh, must Instagram that!” (like I’ve got some huge audience checking my photos, when I probably get 2-3 likes per picture – I’m fine with that btw – it’s just funny how I felt like I needed to document so much!). I also had a few messages I was due that hadn’t arrived, and there was no way other than electronically I could get them (Shaun checked a Facebook message, but only remembered to tell me tonight). These days it’s email or Facebook or texts or even phone calls, and in the past it was just hoping a message would get to the person before we all had mobiles.

saturday-2

If I was to compare today versus yesterday, then having internet has been something we couldn’t have managed without. My phone is useless (I can’t even post on Facebook on it – though can upload photos), the internet is slow apart from the app to check bus times (occasionally) but I’ve come to rely on it. When we were out and about I could use Wifi to find out train times home and bookshops near where we were to shop, and had I done the challenge today I’d have failed (or would still be in Central London with Shaun and H wanting to kill me).

Having said that, there were things which are our everyday lives I had to cram into Friday night – doing two washloads, getting some bread made in the breadmaker and so on – and on getting home on Saturday we all opted for soup, but only had time to use the Soup Maker, so Shaun had to do it – in fact, he had to make breakfast (toaster, coffee maker – we’re out of instant coffee) and lunch (toasties in the George Formby grill) – and it’s the little things we own to make our busy lives easier which we’d have really missed. Poor Shaun!

I missed playing Solitaire on the iPad last thing at night, though finished knitting my new hat (and wore it today!), so I achieved something from yesterday. Also, H and I did a spot of Finger Knitting (which I then insisted Shaun took a photo of for my Project 365 photo for yesterday) – she was a natural and had the patience for it too which was nice – we’ve since done more because it’s fun – I think I’ll be getting the bobbin out in the coming week to let her do it properly.

H had her nursery open morning and review, and I found some information on the walls I’d forgotten about (TfL’s Road Safety for 3 year olds and upwards), which I wanted to text to myself as a reminder – but instead had to rely on my memory, which didn’t let me down. I just signed her up, anyway.

We went to Ikea. We had an argument about a lightbulb. I’d like to think this was because we were in Ikea rather than it being about a lack of technology – and Shaun used his card or we paid with cash. In fact, the only time which could have been borderline fail was when I used the code to get into nursery – as it’s an electronic pad. Sorry. I could have knocked until we were let in (or asked Shaun to key it in), but it didn’t cross my mind.

So, would I do this again? Maybe. I found it was worse in the evening – around this time – when I’m online more. Through the day was fine and easily forgotten about. Not taking photos was hard. I didn’t realise how much I relied on technology. I didn’t get around to starting my Peter Hook book, and not being online I missed the announcement about the My Bloody Valentine album (though I’d probably not have been able to buy it anyway seeing as their website crashed). I saw a newspaper headline with the words “Gazza” and “dying” and wanted to google it (rather than buy The Sun), but had to wait until today.

So yes, I might give this another go in the summer, or when it’s a bit warmer. Does anyone else fancy the challenge? Come on, it’s fun! (and all your friends will ask you why too)

I Am Going To Do A Day Without Technology

I saw this excellent post over at Eljae.com about Jae’s day without technology and pondered a while on it, could I do it? Maybe… Shaun then said I’d never in a billion years be able to so that was it, the challenge was set, I am going to prove him wrong.

I’ve nominated this Saturday as my day to do it – we’ve got H’s open day at nursery in the morning (hey, maybe we could, like, walk there? Then shop local with some cash afterwards – as cashpoints aren’t allowed – seeing as the Carshalton shops are facing a bit of a struggle) oh, and it won’t be too hard not to Instagram it all as my phone is so ancient I have to use my iPad or iPod anyway. Phew. This could mean I don’t get to watch Casualty on Saturday night and have to watch endless repeats of programmes about cars on the Discovery Channels, but I’ll suffer this pain for you, dear reader.

There are rules as set out by El; my only thought is whether I can use my Oyster card if we decide to go for a walk then get the bus home. Also, I normally place my weekly Ocado shop on a Saturday night; other than that? Well, there’s nothing that can’t wait. I think. I hope. No hairdryer! No kettle or toaster! (this means Shaun will have to make breakfast, oh well) Oh, and no using the washing machine either… this also means I won’t accidentally post on Facebook using his account which will please him (although to be fair, his phone is good at posting using his account without him realising anyway).

I can do this! Come back on Sunday or Monday and I’ll have my beautifully handwritten notes about how difficult my life is without technology (probably). If anything, my handwriting needs tidying up a bit, it’s been a while, plus my 2013 diary is empty.

So I have been tagged by Joanne and I’m going to do it! My stubborn Taurean nature has kicked in and I’m not going to be defeated! Plus I bought the Joy Division book by Peter Hook and I’ve almost finished my latest Kindle read. The timing couldn’t be better…. see you on the other side…

Crafty – Toilet Roll Butterflies

I’m posting this up on behalf of Heather – they look fabulous!Toilet Roll Butterflies

Here’s what to do!

We had some toilet rolls kicking around for a couple of weeks as M has been collecting them – she’s had a bit of a thing, and wanted to make Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus characters as we’d seen them on a tv programme before Christmas.

I googled around and adapted them with things we had around the house – like pipe cleaners and fluffy bobbles for antennae, then experimented with different patterned paper from the crafty drawer, and some glitter glue pens for decoration!

M was really good with doing most of it with some help (like drawing the lines, glueing the paper on) – we ran out of plastic eyes (but they’d look really good too!) – but they’re really simple to do, I just stuck plenty of paper on the rolls – the wings are folded in half when they’re being cut to keep them symettrical, and away you go! Great fun!

Thanks Heather! I know what we’ll be doing this weekend…!

Henry Hugglemonster is coming to Disney Junior!

Henry Hugglemonster's Family

Dear Peppa Pig,

H has loved you obsessively now for around two years, but I’m afraid you have a rival on the horizon. We still love you, but the good thing about love is that you can share it around many things and never run out.

Sorry, but I’m sure you’ll understand,

H’s Parents.

p.s. if your child is scared of monsters like H was, then this programme may well be one that helps turn it around – she’s giggling her head off right now at how funny the family are.

===

Henry Hugglemonster

Henry Hugglemonster has just entered our lives – and he’s set to enter yours too. Henry is a five-year old middle child, well, monster really and is based on the book ‘I’m A Happy Hugglewug’ by Niamh Sharkey (published by Walker Books).

Niamh has been very closely involved with the production – and having watched the preview episodes it has lovely graphics, a really nice message, catchy songs and the kind of thing you could let your child watch and know they’ll find it funny (rather than being troubled about something) – plus – it’s all about family and togetherness and gets the message across really well.

Today in Central London we were invited to meet Niamh to learn more about Henry and his family – and we all got to draw a Henry (H’s work was good – she helped colour in mine) – as well as having the book read to us.

Niamh Sharkey and H

So, what do we know? Niamh wrote the book back in 2006, and worked on a short piece which Disney Junior loved and commissioned straight away with Brown Bag Films based in Dublin. Niamh is also Laureate na nÓg, Ireland’s laureate for children’s literature – in fact, H has been going on and on about a book ‘The Ravenous Beast’ which they read a lot at nursery, it ends up* Niamh writes and illustrates that as well (so I see another favourite author on the horizon here). One thing she mentioned today was how she likes bringing pictures into reading – especially at the age our kids are now, they can’t read – but they can identify pictures and a lot is about having a good visual behind your story.

Henry Hugglemonster is voiced by Brian Blessed (hurrah!), Brenda Blethyn and just announced earlier today, Geri Halliwell as well as others. Then there’s the songs – ohh they’re catchy – especially the theme (which refuses to leave my head).

Geri Halliwell Henry Hugglemonster

There’s a sneaky showing this Friday at 5.50pm on Disney Junior if you’re not sure what all the fuss is about – there’s 48 eleven minute episodes made, plus two longer ones for seasonal times – so quite soon Henry Hugglemonster will be everywhere! The show premieres on February 8th on Disney Junior at 5.50pm and is shown twice a week. Seriously, don’t miss it. You won’t thank me for the earworm, though you’ll be happy to hear your little one giggling along to it!

Justin’s Back – New Album ‘The Best Of Friends’ and tour

Mr Tumble

Justin Fletcher (who is possibly busier than Miss Rabbit as far as work goes) has a new album out, and is also heading out on tour (and the most important thing of all, the press release says – wait for it – CLIFF TUMBLE WILL BE THERE!!!!!!!!!)

Ahem, must compose myself.

Firstly, the new Justin album ‘The Best Of Friends’ is packed full of familiar tunes that everyone is going to love singing to – songs from musicals, classics, as well as his new single, the title track ‘The Best Of Friends (Best Friends Forever)’ which has a fun, easy-to-learn dance with hand movements for everyone to join in with!

Justin says: “Singing is something that the whole family can do together and I’ve had a wonderful time recording the new album. Children love all types of music so it has been great fun compiling a diverse collection of songs that we hope everyone will enjoy.”

Justin Fletcher - Best of Friends

Justin will be performing his new single live when he headlines the Justin & Friends arena show tour this Easter so remember to wear your dancing shoes and be ready to raise the roof as you sing along to “The Best Of Friends”!

For more information about “The Best Of Friends” visit http://www.facebook.com/justinfletcherofficial – you can preorder the album at Amazon, and it will also be available from all good record stores – physical and digital!

So, as well as releasing the album, Justin is heading out on a Cbeebies Live tour – which will see Gigglebiz favourites like Nana Knickerbocker, Lost Pirate, Arthur Sleep and Keith Fit alongside the Tumble family from Something Special (yes, Cliff’s name is mentioned).

“I’m incredibly excited about bringing so many characters to life on stage for a live audience” said Justin Fletcher MBE. “We’re using all of our showbiz ingenuity to bring them all together for the first time in a terrific new arena show.”

Justin will also be joined by Robert the Robot and Little Monster (from Justin’s house), and a spectacular rock and roly-poly show is promised for a very special visitor!

Justin will be joined by Nina from Nina and the Neurons. Andy Day the Cbeebies presenter, and Katy ‘I Can Cook’ Ashworth. As Robert’s enthusiasm for tidying up threatens Justin’s plans to stage the most amazing show ever, he’ll need your help to keep things on track.

Books For Bugs

Books For BugsH is a bookworm – she has an entire Billy bookcase from Ikea full of books (and some toys, to be fair), but I’ll never tire of buying books, and I’m always on the lookout for quirky titles and different ones. I used to be a Barefoot Books Ambassador a couple of years ago, but had to give it up – so if you know the kind of books they do, you get the idea of what we like.

Somehow, I stumbled across Books For Bugs (I can’t remember how!) – they’re based fairly locally to us and do some fairs, and their website and shop is based on selling affordable books to parents. I bought some in their recent sale which arrived today for presents, and they fit perfectly into the kind of books we love. Add to this there’s loads of phonics books (and yes, I do still have concerns about H and her starting school this September, despite her doing really well at her private nursery preschool) and you can buy them at a good price (all their board books and story books are just £2.99 each, no matter how high the RRP), PLUS there’s reviews or short summaries of the books on each page to help you choose.

Their shipping price is really reasonable, and the books arrive well packed and quick – all in all I’m really happy with the service we received and highly recommend them to you – keep up to date with them on Facebook for any sales or deals that might be happening too – they’re running competitions when they hit a certain number of followers!
